There is lots of ongoing debate in the REAL food world about whether people should be eating grains or not.  Sometimes I have a health coaching client that I suspect would be healthier without eating grains and boy they don’t like me when I suggest taking a break from pasta, bread, muffins and all the other grain-based foods they love.  And they can’t imagine raising a child with no grains – that’s a tough one to wrap your mind around.  Believe me, I know – I’ve been there, done that and in a grain-obsessed society it’s not an easy diet to follow for anyone especially a child or teen.

 

I’m a grain-lover in theory.  But grains don’t necessarily love me.  Metabolically I’m a protein-type and need lots of high quality animal protein and fats and do better with fewer grains.  I’d probably be best with none.  For those of you new to this REAL food journey it may be hard believe that even whole grains are not healthy for some people.    Some people definitely argue that human beings should not be eating grains at all and getting their carbs mainly from vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds – you may have hard about the Paleo diet? or the GAPS diet? 

 

The truth is there is not one right diet for everyone.  And, your ‘just right’ diet changes throughout your life.

 

If you are eating grains, and I suspect there’s a good chance you are, it’s most ideal if the grains you eat are soaked or sprouted.  This is the traditional way people have eaten grains.  The process is pretty easy and makes the grains more digestible and nutritious.
