| Life’s Like an Hourglass, Glued to the Table… |

During my morning workout listening to Pandora, Anna Nalick’s song Breathe came on – and her words “Life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table…” hit me for the very first time. Isn’t it funny how you can hear something a thousand times and then something sticks and you can’t wipe it off?!? It seems a bit doomsday to me – there’s no turning back in life, just moving forward – so get over it! But my next thought was this: every time I make a change for the better, I turn that life hourglass over – a fresh start – renewed life! Thank God!
Then a few thoughts later, I related those words to medicine (of course) . “Life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table…”. Old world medicine told us just that: you’re born with a fixed set of genes that will determine how your life is expressed. Then the field of epigenetics was born! Now science tells us differently: you’re born with a dynamic set of genes that express themselves differently depending on what your external (non-genetic) environment is telling them to do. Translation: your life is not fixed – make a change and your life changes! As a doctor, this revolutionized my thinking. I can’t change that my patient was born with an extra chromosome, Trisomy 21 or Down Syndrome. But I can help this child change her environment to optimize her genetic expression! What a breathe of fresh air! So many children who walk through my office door are stuck in a state of imbalance – an imbalanced digestive system (constipation or Celiac Disease) or an imbalanced nervous system (ADD or anxiety). But with my renewed thinking, I now realize that it’s just a matter of finding enough of the “spot on” environmental changes for them that will light up their genes to express themselves differently. Then, these beautiful children will get unstuck – they will move and re-balance themselves. They will heal.
One “spot on” change for a lot of children is optimizing their vitamin D level. Research now links vitamin D deficiency to a host of diseases from cancer to asthma. Did you know that research suggests vitamin D is protective against type 1 diabetes? That is truly amazing! Again, our genes are not fixed (pre-determined to express a certain way). Our genes are dynamic – they change their expression based on their environmental input.
We give ourselves and our 3 children vitamin D everyday with Arctic-D Cod Liver Oil. Supply these two nutrients – essential fatty acids and vitamin D – and optimize your child’s immune health today. Check out The Vitamin D Cure and Omega-Research for supporting research. The Vitamin D Cure also has a 5-Step easy to follow program for optimizing your vitamin D and health in general. Good stuff!
