Vitamins: Why are Minerals So Important Print E-mail

Many parents in my practice are focused soley on vitamins. They are discouraged with their child's diet and they want an insurance factor. "What multivitamin can I give my child to ensure his/her body's needs are met?" Parents are often not enthused to hear my answer:  "No vitamin (or mineral) supplement can replace the REAL deal:  a well-balanced, whole foods diet."  No matter how hard we try - we cannot replace what nature so beautifully packaged for us in the form of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains. REAL food is naturally packed full of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients.

Vitamins:
Many people already know that vitamins are necessary for our body to function normally.  Some vitamins function as hormones [vitamin D] and others as antioxidants [vitamin E]; vitamins also help with cell signalling, cell growth [vitamin A] and assist enzyme reactions, just to name a few.

Minerals: What people often forget is that minerals are just as essential as vitamins.  Minerals support biochemical reactions in the body; without them our body doesn't function properly.  Some minerals build bone [calcium, phosphorus], others are important in making hormones [iodine], and others assist antioxidant enzymes [selenium].

The best insurance policy to ensure your kids are getting all these essential vitamins and minerals is with a REAL foods diet - there's no substitute.

That being said, it's often nice to have an insurance factor with a supplement. Make sure you know and trust the manufacturer and that it's free of artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors and hydrogenated oils.

Our favorite is "x" for these 3 reasons (in addition to meeting all the requirements above):  it's packed with vitamins and minerals that are proven to get into the cell where they are needed; it's packed with phytonutrients from a blend of fruits and veggies equal to the antioxidant ORAC score of 1 serving of fruits and vegetables; and, it contains essential amino acids - the building blocks of proteins, essential for normal body function.

Keeping our kids healthy and happy is our goal - providing adequate nutrition to meet their vitamin, mineral, amino acid and antioxidant needs is very important.  Make every effort to put only REAL food into their precious bodies!  For added insurance add "x".
