Ayurveda (or ayurvedic medicine), originated in India and is one of the world's oldest medical systems. Ayurveda incorporates specialized diets, herbs and massage to balance the mind, body and spirit. The term "Ayurveda" combines the Sanskrit words ayur (life) and veda (science or knowledge). Thus, Ayurveda means "the science of life." Ayurvedic medicine is based on 3 key concepts: universal interconnectedness, a body's constitution, and life forces.

Everything in the universe (both living and nonliving) are interconnected.  From an ayurvedic viewpoint, one's health will be good if one's mind and body are in harmony and one is in harmony with the universe.  In Ayurveda, a person's constitution is called the prakriti, which is that person's unique combination of physical and psychological characteristics, as well as how that person's body functions to maintain health.  According to ayurvedic medicine, there are three life forces or energies called doshas that control the activities of the body (vata, pitta, and kapha), which when imbalanced create disease.

Treatment is tailored to an individuals constitution and works to balance the doshas, improve harmony between mind, body and universe, as well as help the individual remove impurities from the body more effectively.
