Probiotics May Be Useful Against Colds, Flu-Like Symptoms in Children. Probiotics may be useful to prevent cold and flu-like symptoms in children, according to the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Pediatrics, August 2009.

Medscape Medical News
"Daily dietary probiotic supplementation for 6 months was a safe effective way to reduce fever, rhinorrhea, and cough incidence and duration and antibiotic prescription incidence, as well as the number of missed school days attributable to illness, for children 3 to 5 years of age," the study authors write. "No notable adverse events were attributed to study probiotic strains.

Though this study included only a few hundred 3 to 5 years olds, it's exciting to see more research demonstrating the benefit and safety of probiotics. I have been recommending probiotics for years and have yet to see an adverse reaction, even with infants. Though not yet accepted as standard treatment for cold and flu prevention, we look forward to the day when probiotics will be recommended by your primary care practitioner!

Keep probiotics in your tool box. They are a perfect place to start supporting your child's immune system today.
