Purchase a bag of organic flax or chia seeds, which can be found at your local grocery store or online at Wilderness Family Naturals. Put a little in a bowl so your kids can look at it and feel it. Explain that flax and chia seeds comes from plants and they are foods that help keep people very healthy because they contain omega-3 fats. Essential fats have to come from our food because our bodies can't make them. Explain to your child that her brain is two-thirds fat, so this omega-3 fat will help her brain work better so she can be her smartest self!

Use a coffee grinder, food processor or Vita-Mix to grind up the seeds.  Their oils get compromised shortly after being ground so it's best to grind them yourself just before eating.

With your children, brainstorm all the foods they can eat where they can mix in flax or chia seeds. Be creative and list all of the ideas everyone suggests even if they may not sound appealing to you! Share some of your own suggestions. Every day have your child choose one of the ideas and let him or her sprinkle some ground flax or chia seeds on or in that food. Then talk about which are your favorite ideas and fold them into your staple meals and snacks menu.
