When you have enough time to shop with your child and not feel too rushed, have him 'help' you shop from your list. Talk about why you are just buying items on your list - they are a part of your menu for the week, it helps you keep within your grocery budget, etc. Have your child weigh the apples and carrots and figure out how much they are going to cost. Teach her to compare prices. Ask him how much the yogurt is minus the coupon savings. The REAL life math practice is abundant in the grocery store! Find ways to engage your child in the process of shopping and figuring out the costs of REAL food at the store and then discuss the savings from REAL food at the doctor's office!
