Making your own baby food couldn’t be easier. Take it from the "un"cook. All it takes is a bit of planning and preparation each week and you’ll be set to feed your baby fresh healthy food for every meal. 5 Benefits of Fresh Baby Food are: Nutritional Value, No Additives, Variety, Low Cost, and Personal Satisfaction (my favorite)!

Why Make Your Own?
The first puree I made for my baby was sweet potatoes. I couldn’t believe the color - a vibrant orange - absolutely beautiful. In an instant, I flashed back to the color of the jarred food I served my first born - DULL. The difference is simple: when you prepare food for your baby it’s fresh, full of nature’s phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. It’s complete, ready for your little one to easily digest. Can you imagine eating canned food for each of your meals? That’s what we’re asking our babies to do when we feed them all jarred food. Sure it has some nutritional value, but nothing compared to a fresh puree.

What are Healthy Alternatives?
(if I choose not to make my own)
In some parts of the United States, you can pick up fresh baby food at your grocery store. Homemade Baby’s certified organic food for infants is made fresh everyday. If you live in L.A., Bohemian Baby will deliver to your doorstep. You don’t live in L.A.? No problem, they’ll even ship to your home! Evie’s Organic Edibles is another similar company, as they say on their website "a personal chef for your child." Sounds good to me! You can also pick up organic flash-frozen baby food in the frozen food aisle. Happy Baby Food, Plum Organics, or "as seen on Oprah" Mom Made.

5 Simple Steps to Making Your Own Baby Food
There are several books available teaching you the details, but the basics are shown below. Some cookbooks suggest microwaving to cook or reheat, which I do not recommend. Microwaving heats from the inside out, changing the molecular structure of your food. In the process, new molecules are created and more nutrients are lost. I always cook and reheat on the stove for this reason.
  • Prep: Wash, peel, chop
  • Cook: Place in steamer basket in a saucepan on the stove
  • Puree: Add reserved water to desired consistency
  • Freeze: Pour into ice-cube freezer trays
  • Serve: Thaw to room temperature, gently warm over simmering water

The Sky’s the Limit
What’s so empowering about making your own baby food, is there is no limit. You can make whatever you’d like. Around 6 months of age, you start with simple purees and as your child grows, you mash what the rest of the family is eating and voila, dinner is ready!
